Armies on Parade I

On my list of hobby targets this year I have Armies on Parade. Now I started this last year so I’ve got a good head start and my idea hasn’t changed either, which is also good, I do have a habit of changing direction mid project 🙂

The inspiration for this project comes from three pieces of art work.

These pieces, all done by John Blanche, are three of my favourites and I have spent untold hours staring at them as a teen. Now I want to create something special which combines elements from each one but with my own interpretation and all three images lend themselves greatly to inspiring an Armies on Parade project.

So lets take a look at my progress so far.

Lots of materials have been combined, from 3D printed elements and plastic bits to natural parts like the branches. The ground is textured resin parts and wall filler and there are a few GW bits used as well. Long way to go before I can get priming and so far I’m pretty pleased with how things are turning out. A few more gothic building pieces are needed I think and I’ve been toying with idea of giving it a painted back drop.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot! It needs skulls. Lots more SKULLS!!!

Below is a not very good teaser shot of what my Dark Angels are going to look like. I’ve opted for a Dark Angel Horus Heresy era armour colour as I have never really liked my Dark Angels green. They were black in the Rogue Trader days and they shall remain that way! The Death Wing bone is a must as well, with feathers! 🙂

Until next time. Happy hobby!

Horus Heresy Blood Angels I

The start of my Blood Angels HH army started with making some dice boxes. As is appropriate with Blood Angels the boxes are coffins. I bought the blank boxes from a craft store in town and then designed the inserts using CAD and 3D printing them in a lovely shiny red flexible material. I then filled the lid section with Blood Angel bits to make it look like a relic. All this was then painted with the usual red and gold.

The dice fit perfectly and because the material is flexible they are easy to get out but will not fall out. The ultimate goal of this project is to make a relic type box to store the army in along with these dice coffins and other gaming essentials. I have the parts now, so all I need is the drive and time. Keep watching this space!

Road to BOYL I

Hello all!

So I’m off to Boyl this year for my second time and I’ve been busy getting ready for it. I can’t begin to tell you what an awesome trip it is, a few days off work and a weekend of wargame shenanigans, which all kicks off, as it should, with a visit to Mecca ( Warhammer World ) where I shall empty my pockets of all cash and smile from ear to ear as I do it. Then it’s onto the base of operations and a much needed first of many beers. Bliss!!!

Lets take a look at what I’ve painted so far shall we 🙂

First up it’s an Inquisitors war band.

And they will be up against the corrupted genius of this Tzeentch Sorcerer and his trusty thug of a Chaos Marine…….oh and a bunch of Daemons.

The fight will all take place on this board. A library of forbidden lore and portals to the unknown.

Femme Militant

So I went and chopped up a rare Femme Militant miniature. It was bound to happen eventually and I think the result has worked out fine. The base model is that of Ratspyke, with a 3D printed ruff and the head of a Delaque. Her little friend is a model from crooked dice, which acts as her familiar.

Turnip28-Sludge_1

A very Happy New year to you all! So lets get stuck into the mud of all things Turnip and Sludge shall we. I’ve been sitting on the fence with this particular potential project and it wasn’t until a good friend of mine went all ballistic with a Sludge army that things began to change. As with everything like this other friends soon followed and before I knew it I was super excited about starting a Turnip28 army with all the root veg trimmings finished of with Sludge gravy! Yummy!!

In usual fashion I went about finding models to suit my theme and began a blitz of 3D printing to stock up on bits that will go nicely with the Perry Miniature boxsets I have just bought. But to start things off I decided to make a few characters that will be the centre of the army, two of which I shall introduce to you today.

The Spud Witch! Deeply rooted ( yes I went there! ) in evil ways, the rotting soil of her creations are things of abject horror and make even the most steadfast of turnip knights dump their spuds and quake in fear. Rotten to the core and loving it, she is the Queen of Spuds, bane of worms and mistress of roots.

She also has a skull rodent familiar for no other reason than why not.

Second character and one of the Spud Witches favourite pets is Boar. Boar is a rather large and aggressive pig and his pussy black eyes see everything. Keen on truffles he also has a taste for turnip knights and practically anything that annoys the Spud witch. Loyal to the root and as angry as they come, Boar is the ultimate battering ram, manure factory and

I purchased this model from a talented 3D artist called Alexei Konev and 3D printed it using a printer at work. The detail of it is amazing and the skin texture is especially great and a joy to paint. Now you may be thinking that you recognize this pig and as it was pointed out to me on Instagram it’s actually from a game called Blood Bourne. I think it works wonderfully as a centre piece for a Turnip horde though and after looking into Blood Bourne a bit the aesthetics of that game work well in the Grim and the Dark corners of all things 28.

I will leave you now with a few images of the modelling phase and primer phase. I always like to see the working process and will make efforts to do more of them.

Ghoul Band

It’s all about the undead at the moment and to start off the many models I have waiting to be painted here’s the first war band. A bunch of nasty ghouls! Led by a Ghoulmancer and his Feral friend with a large sword. They were a great set of models to paint as I kept things quite loose and on a time limit, a process I intend to keep doing as it means I’ll get more finished, a goal for this year to be sure 🙂

Order of the Black Cross.

The Order of the Black Cross, a small but extremely deadly militant order of the Adepta Sororitas. With bone armour, white robes, pale skin and a large tattoo of a black cross down the length of their faces, they cut a striking and intimidating image. But, by far the most unsettling thing about them is their eyes. They are a milky white. The reason for this is one of their traditions of ascension to full Battle Sister. Upon ascension a battle sister will have a special graft set upon each eye, once healed the eye’s are then tattooed with minute scripture of the Litanies of Faith. It is said that upon waking the script is clear and all encompassing in their vision and it is also said that upon death this is all the sister will see in her final moments.

Sister Resira. Order of the Black Cross

So I’ve finally settled upon a colour scheme and name for my Battle Sisters army. I have also painted my first Battle Sister. Now the problem I have is that they have tattoos of black crosses down their faces. Have you seen how small the battle sisters faces are? Bloody small! This will not stop me though, I am committed! I shall, however ,have to paint all the heads separately as this should make this mission I have inflicted upon myself easier.

All this painting small fiddly stuff made me want to wade in with a brush and get all experimental on something big! That big thing is one of the many Relic Chapel Tank of the Order of the Black Cross. These large relics are of shattered ruins of sacred places. They are given an ancient tracked base, a radiant statue of a Saint placed upon the highest point and go to war covered in Sisters all crying their hatred at the enemy and raining righteous death upon them. The sight of one of these behemoths of Imperial faith rumbling over the fallen and surrounded by purifying fire stirs the sisters to fight on no matter what and once it falls the track unit is recovered and waits for the time another sacred ruin is found.

Slaanesh War band

Flesh, pain and pleasure! The sadistic lovers of Chaos. SLAANESH!!! Sssaay she who thirsts name with rapture!

So I’ve been adding to my Slaanesh war band the forbidden fruits of which are the subject of this post. This is one of those projects that is on the slow burn and I’m pretty sure, in fact I know, I will be adding more to it over time, I already have a few unopened boxes of Slaanesh goodies in the model draws and The Keeper of Secrets will be mine ( oh yes it will be mine ) very soon.

As projects go it’s been one of exploring new techniques and pushing myself with converting and modeling (CAD and traditional) plus with the release of Contrast paints it has given me the opportunity to do some speed painting, a method I used to do the cultists. All in all then it’s been great fun and some of my most satisfying hobby moments have come from it. May they continue in Slaanesh’s name!
